Sony HDTV

sony hdtvSony is another company that moved out of the plasma market and instead concentrated on the burgeoning LCD niche, at the same time re-branding its products as Sony Bravia.

While Sony is already a household name in consumer electronics products, it seems the brand has lost its lustre especially in HDTVs, as it continue to be out-performed by popular and established brands offering more cutting-edge innovations.

The Sony Bravia XBR is the flagship line and the Sony HDTVs under this line are undoubtedly top-notch. Backed by the Bravia Engine 2 Pro color processor and the Advanced Contrast Enhancer Pro (ACE Pro), these LCDs give vivid colors and, together with the smart Triluminos RGB LED backlight system, provides superb black levels and shadow details. The sleek and stylish HDTVs in the XBR series are full 1080p HD resolution sets and use the Motionflow 120Hz to reduce motion-blur and judder. These sets are rather pricey, which is one reason why sales are quite sluggish.

With some of the deepest arsenal of products, the other Sony HDTVs under the Bravia name are categorized in a confusing cacophony of alphabetic lines, and within lines an endless array of even more confusing numeric series. Thus, we have the W-Series, which is below the XBR TVs, but much higher than the S-Series. Adding to this chaos are lines named rather arbitrarily, such as the EX1 series which boasts of “Bravia 1080 Wireless” technology, allowing wireless connectivity to a wall-mounted set without loss of quality. The rule of thumb, it seems, is that lower letters and numbers are basically older versions, and, consequently, higher letters and numbers are the descendant models.
