Panasonic Viera TC-P50X1 Review

Often, the price of an HDTV is an indication of its quality. The more expensive an HDTV is, the more features it has and the better picture quality it offers. This isn’t exactly the case for the Panasonic Viera TC-P50X1, though, which is an affordable HDTV but still offers good picture quality among other things.

Design

The TC-P50X1 has a thick, glossy black frame with just a thin silver strip at the bottom – nothing unique or eye-catching there but it’s not an unattractive piece either. It sports invisible speakers like most HDTVs today

and a somewhat bulky, nonswiveling stand that blends in nicely nonetheless.

There is nothing special about its clicker, either. For the most part, it is the same as that of previous models, except for the addition of a few buttons which are not really necessary. The buttons are easy to press and vary in shape and color, making up for the lack of a backlight.

Screen/Picture Clarity

One thing consumers should note about this Viera HDTV is that it does not have the 1080p resolution that most HDTVs currently offer. Rather, it is a 720p HDTV. In spite of this, though, it offers excellent picture quality, with blacks that are impressively deeper than some of its more expensive peers, solid shadow detail and well-saturated colors, making the extra pixels hard to miss. The only problem here is color accuracy which is less than superb with tinges of green and bluish greys.

Because of its resolution, though, it is only expected that it does not handle 1080p or even 1080i sources well, though it delivers 720p images with striking detail. Motion also appears sharp and smooth like most Plasmas.

Features

In terms of features, the Viera TC-P50X1 lacks a lot, including interactive capabilities and picture-in-picture. Its picture controls are not as extensive as some sets, either. It has the basics, though, and also offers good connectivity consisting of three HDMI inputs – two on the back and one on the side panel – two component video inputs and an SD card slot for media playback. Sadly, a PC input has also been excluded.

The Panasonic Viera TC-P50X1 lacks a lot, indeed, but then again, its excellent picture quality should make up for it and the fact that it costs less than a thousand dollars – rare for an HDTV of its size – makes it well worth considering.
