Samsung UN55B6000 Review

Whether in terms of physical figures or in gadget styles, thin is definitely in. Just take the Samsung UN55B6000, for example. It is one of Samsung’s thinnest LED-lit LCD HDTV displays, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Design

The Samsung UN55B6000 measures only 1.2 inches thick at the center, and is even thinner around the edges where the display seamlessly finishes off with a slim black bezel, a red border and a transparent

edge. Albeit an eyecatching piece, those who don’t particularly like red might have to look elsewhere since, like many of Samsung’s previous models, the border is only available in red and the same goes for its graceful stand that swivels to either side.

The red and black scheme continues in the on-screen menu, which offers large text against transparent backgrounds across the entire screen and helpful explanatory text along the bottom, making it easy to navigate. Its remote, though, has a plain glossy black finish, as well as large, backlit buttons.

Screen/Picture Clarity

Like the models in the 7000 series, the UN55B6000 offers deep black levels, thanks to its LED backlight which also allows it to run cooler than other sets. The shadow detail is excellent, as well, while both the primary and secondary colors are highly accurate. The images would have been better, though, if the colors were more saturated instead of appearing a bit washed out in bright scenes, and the fluctuating backlight is an issue Samsung should fix.

As for dejudder processing, Samsung continues to excel, adding even a fourth mode to its Auto Motion Plus called Custom. The Custom mode applies blur reduction to video-based sources and judder reduction to film-based sources, rendering both in amazing quality even during fast-moving sequences. Up to 700 lines of 1080p sources are displayed, which is good enough, while 1080i and lower-resolution sources are properly deinterlaced.

Features

The UN55B6000 may not be the best interactive HDTV around since it lacks Yahoo widgets or DLNA compliance. In fact, it doesn’t even have the media library that so many Samsung models come with. Still, it offers its own interactive add-ons like the InfoLink, which provides access to basic online information like news headlines, local weather and stock market updates. This Samsung HDTV is also capable of directly receiving firmware updates from the site so you don’t need to use a USB drive, although it still offers two USB inputs for convenient file sharing, as well as four HDMI inputs, which can all be found on the rear panel, a PC input and a component-video connection.

Indeed, the Samsung UN55B6000 is more than just another ultra-thin HDTV. Rather, it is an excellent LED-lit HDTV which can offer great images while cutting down your power consumption. True, it is a bit expensive, but then again, the combination of beauty and substance rarely comes cheap.
