Samsung UN55B7000 Review

3.5/5

LED-based HDTVs are excellent choices because of their increased energy efficiency and brighter screens, and the Samsung UN55B7000 is a perfect example. With an eye-catching design, innovative edge-lit technology, amazing picture quality and other impressive features, it is no wonder the UN55B7000 is being touted one of Samsung’s best.

Design

The UN55B7000 is one of Samsung’s most stylish pieces yet, and one of the thinnest, being only 1.2 inches deep at the center and slimming down further towards the edges, where the sleek black frame is tapered

with a red border before finishing off in an elegant, transparent edge. The stand, which is also transparent with accents of red and silver, swivels from side to side for convenience, while a special ultra-slim wallmount is also provided. The only design issue is that there are currently no alternatives to the red border, which spells bad luck for those who find it too distracting.

The on-screen menu has red borders, too, although other than that, it is pretty much the same as previous models. The remote control of the Samsung UN55B8000 isn’t bad, either, and is, in fact, very user-friendly with the unresponsive scroll wheel replaced with large, backlit buttons of different shapes. A slight change on the design also keeps it steady on flat surfaces so it doesn’t easily hit the floor.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The LED lighting of the UN55B7000 allows it to deliver impressively deep black levels, though its new edge-lit arrangement prevents it from matching those of the best. The brightness of the screen is affected, too, which appears less than uniform at times, especially during dark scenes. Still, this can only be discerned by trained eyes, and the highly accurate, vibrant colors mask it to deliver breathtaking images that pop off the screen even so.

With a 120Hz refresh rate, the UN55B7000 has no problems preventing blur during fast-moving scenes, and another good thing is that the anti-blur mechanism remains in place even with the dejudder processing turned off. Both 1080p and 1080i sources are processed to a tee.

Features

Four adjustable picture modes – all independent per input – and four aspect ratio modes top the list of the Samsung UN55B7000′s many picture settings, while three power-saving modes help cut down energy consumption even further. Yahoo widgets, built-in video streaming capacity and enhanced DLNA capability make it one of the most interactive HDTVs around, while extensive connectivity options are provided, starting off with four HDMI inputs, a VGA input and not just one but two USB slots that make sharing photos, videos and music files a breeze.

Combine all these and you have a truly excellent HDTV, which is worth more than $2000, by the way. True, its picture quality may not exactly live up to its price but its other features do, and since it is an
edge-lit HDTV, it is sure to look good not only in your living room but also on your electric bill.
