The LC52D92U from Sharp’s fine Aquos line is one of the better LCDs in the market, with more positive points than negative ones. This high-end Aquos is a truly remarkable HDTV, both in its eye-catching styling and hefty price tag.
Design
Sharp TVs never fail to catch attention, and the LC52D92U is, naturally, no exception. A moderately thick frame of two inches – the top and bottom are actually only 1.5 inches but with an off-black rounded strip on

each side, measures almost the same as the sides. The glossy finish of the body and the stand, along with the subtle chrome accents on the sides, gives this LCD TV a sleek, sophisticated appeal. The ultra-thin bar with cloth grille that contains the unit’s speaker further heightens the slickness of this LCD.
The LC52D92U also remains true to Sharp’s tradition of using the same orange-backlit remote control for its HDTVs. With a neat arrangement of keys that is for a greater part logical, the remote is intuitive and easy to use. The unchanged menu system is also easy to navigate and the inclusion of textual explanations at the bottom for each selection is a nice touch.
Screen/picture clarity
The strongest advantage of the LC52D92U is in its deep blacks that surpass all comers in the flat panel industry. Coupled with accurate colours and greyscales, superior off-angle image reproduction, absence of false-contouring, and excellent detail rendering, this LCD surely is one of the better-performing ones. However, one problem that Sharp can’t seem to solve persists – the uneven brightness across the screen which is too obvious to be ignored. Another downside is the less accurate shadow details it displays, which is quite surprising given the technological advances the company has gained in its black depths.
The LC52D92U gives solid video processing and with 120hz. frame rate, fast action scenes are smooth and seamless. This full 1080p HD resolution TV resolves high-def materials exceptionally well, though for standard-def sources, the output is just slightly above average. When used as PC screen through DVI, text and image resolution is quite good and is one of the LCDs that works well as PC monitor.
Features
The LC52D92U certainly allows generous tweaking: with five preset adjustable picture modes, one fixed picture mode and one “User” mode per input, five colour temperature presets, and black level control for black levels. The proprietary OPC senses ambient light and adjusts the TV light accordingly while there are numerous aspect ratio options for HDTV sources. With ample connectivity, the LCD has three HDMI and one DVI for PCs, and numerous connectors for other inputs, but Sharp failed to place some of the connectors on more accessible side positions.
The Aquos LC52D92U is an exceptional, albeit expensive, HDTV by any measure. If you can live with its screen uniformity problem which may sometimes be distracting, this LCD is an excellent choice. And the hefty price tag is surely worth it, given the overflowing features packed in this set.
