Sony may have flooded the market with a deluge of Bravias that cater to all buyer types, but the two-year old KDL-46X2000U continues to draw loyal patrons for its awesome picture quality and impressive performance, which is considered the best in its time. The very first X-Series HDTV in the Bravia line, this LCD surely created a buzz when it was released, as it was fitted with cutting-edge features and cool innovations which remain competitive until today.
Design
At the high-end of the Bravia series, the KDL-46X2000U looks mighty awesome than its cheaper siblings like the KDL-46W2000. Starting with the silver bezel with subtle patterns which is thicker on the sides than

the top and bottom frames, the simple but eye-catching design features a clear Perspex glass surrounding the screen bezel and which in turn is further framed by a thin line of silver. The clean lines extend to the non-swivel stand which also matches the metallic colours of the chassis.
The revamped infrared remote commander that came with the KDL-46X2000U is also a far cry from the toy-like clicker shipped with the cheaper Bravias. The matte grey/black finish is elegant while the arrangement of keys is quite logical. The only downside is that most of the keys are smallish and there are just too many buttons surrounding the directional keys that may interfere with operations. But overall, the remote and the user menu are easy to use and intuitive.
Screen/picture clarity
With a more powerful video processor that helps make Freeview and standard-def materials much clearer and cleaner, the pricier KDL-46X2000U offers better picture quality β at least for the SD materials which require more processing to eliminate compression artefacts β than its cheaper W2000 sibling. The KDL-46X2000U gives outstanding black levels, superbly vivid images that look quite natural, and incredible blending of colours due to the full HD resolution β outperforming even the highly rated KDL-46W2000 model in all aspects.
The KDL-46X2000U has no problem resolving 1080p and 1080i sources and upscaling lower resolution materials to fit every pixel of the screen. And the more powerful Bravia Engine EX does justice to its hefty price tag, as pictures are clear of artefacts that are usually seen when playing standard def materials, except for some motion blur seen during fast action scenes.
Features
The features in the KDL-46X2000U may seem outdated but compared to previous models, itβs a feature-packed set: exceptionally clear audio with Virtual Dolby Surround Pro Logic II, picture-in-picture support, MPEG noise reduction, and a slew of picture and colour adjustment controls. The connectivity suite includes two HDMI ports, three Scart sockets, two HD-capable component video jacks and D-Sub PC port.
The KDL-46X2000U is rather old in the fast-evolving HDTV market. But its price has become more affordable than before, and it may not be surprising if you can snag one for half its original price. That would be a great deal, indeed, as this TV surely is a classic that will be popular for years.
