Toshiba Regza 46SV670U Review

Editor’s Rating
2.5/5

Do you want to get an LED HDTV but don’t have much money to spend? If so, the Toshiba Regza 46SV670U should provide the perfect solution. Like other LED HDTVs, it is highly energy efficient and provides excellent picture quality but comes at the price of a regular LCD HDTV so it won’t leave a hole in your savings

Design

At first glance, the Regza 46SV670U looks the same as the ZV650u models, with its glossy black frame erupting into a sea of silver cubes toward its metallic edge. It is covered by a transparent sheet, though,

resembling those HDTVs fashioned out of a single pane of glass and making it look sophisticated in spite of its bulk. It also sports invisible speakers and a matching, swivel stand.

Its clicker is fairly bulky, too, and not backlit, but with buttons that are easy to locate and differentiate based on size and feel alone. The menu system is something Toshiba has improved on, and is more organized and easier on the eyes but is still slightly difficult to navigate since some of the important functions remain hidden.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The Regza 46SV670U is capable of delivering almost infinite blacks, as expected of a local-dimmed LED HDTV, and also scores well on color saturation and accuracy, keeping the images vibrant and very lifelike. In fact, its picture quality would have been perfect if not for the blooming in dark areas – a problem which is more noticeable during off-angle viewing, but should still be imperceptible to those who aren’t keeping an eye out for it. It becomes less apparent with a firmware update, too.

This Regza HDTV also comes with a 240Hz refresh rate, which prevents blurring and enhances motion resolution overall. It also has a Film Stabilization mode with three settings – Off, Standard and Smooth. The Standard mode preserves the proper cadence of 24p signals, eliminating the hitching and flickering problems usually associated with the source, while the Smooth mode introduces dejudder. Both allow the Regza 46SV670U to resolve and display various sources properly.

Features

Unfortunately, the Regza 46SV670U lacks interactive capability unlike its competitors – the sacrifice consumers have to make for its low cost. It offers extensive picture tweaks, though, including full color temperature controls, as well as automatic settings for adjusting the backlight and the dynamic contrast. It scores well on connectivity, too, with four HDMI inputs, two component video inputs, a PC input and a bunch of other connections. Both a USB port and an SD card slot are provided on the side panel.

At an affordable price, the Toshiba Regza 46SV670U is certainly an LED HDTV worth considering. If you have a bigger budget, though, you might want to take a look at the Samsung and Sony LEDs, which offer even better images and plenty of interactive settings that keep them at the top of the LED HDTV competition.
