Toshiba Regza 47ZV650U Review

One of the things which determines the price of an LCD HDTV set is its video processor, particularly its refresh rate. For example, those with a 120Hz refresh rate cost much less than those with 240Hz. In the case of the Toshiba Regza 47ZV650U, though, it is still relatively affordable even if it has the 240Hz effect, which makes it a good choice for those after smooth motion resolution without paying too much.

Design

A silver accent is something you will find in many of the recent Toshiba Regza models, and this is most apparent in the 47ZV650U, where the entire black frame fades into a sea of lustrous silver cubes toward the

edges, finished off with a metallic border. Though complex, the design remains subtle, lending just the right amount of sophistication, and the matching stand conveniently swivels.

Its clicker is also black and silver with buttons that are neatly laid out and easy to distinguish from each other, making the absence of a backlight easy to forget. The on-screen menu has a better color scheme than that of previous ones and is also more straightforward, though some important options are still hard to get to.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The Regza 47ZV650U offers accurate and saturated colors, as well as good shadow detail. Unfortunately, though, the black levels were not too deep, making the images less sharper and realistic than they could have been.

As mentioned earlier, the 47ZV650U has the 240Hz effect. Though this should not be confused with true 240Hz technology, it still works better than the 120Hz technology in eliminating blurring and preventing motion lag. The anti-blurring effect and the dejudder processor can be engaged separately, something other HDTVs do not offer. This Regza model also handles various sources well, especially in its Smooth Film Stabilization setting.

Features

Other picture settings that can be found on the Toshiba 47ZV650U include five adjustable picture modes, an AutoView mode, wherein the ideal parameters are set automatically, five aspect ratio selections, primary color filters and ten color temperature presets – the most offered by any HDTV so far. It lacks picture-in-picture capability, though, along with interactive features. As for connectivity, four HDMI inputs, two component video inputs and a VGA style input make up the list of digital connections while both a USB port and an SD card slot are provided for convenient file sharing.

All in all, the Toshiba Regza 47ZV650U isn’t a bad choice for an HDTV. In fact, it has a lot of strong points to make up for its shortcomings. If you like watching sports or action movies in particular, you won’t regret getting this one, since its 240Hz effect is sure to make a bigger difference in your viewing experience than it will on your savings.
