LED HDTVs have become increasingly popular this year, stealing the spotlight from conventional LCD sets. After all, they are highly energy efficient, long-lasting and produce even deeper black levels. They can be very expensive, too, though, which is why the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U, at a price of as low as $1869, is well worth considering.
Design
The Toshiba Regza 55SV670U is a stylish piece, with the transparent sheet coating the entire front panel giving off the illusion that it is fashioned from a single pane of glass. Otherwise, its design is the same as

Toshiba Regza 55SV670U
the ZV650U series – its sleek black frame fading into silver – hundreds of tiny silver cubes, in fact – towards the edges where it is gilded by a shiny metal frame and the same color scheme applying to its swiveling stand.
The clicker that comes with the 55SV670U is also black and silver, with large, well-placed buttons in a variety of sizes that make them easy to find even in the dark in spite of the absence of a backight. The on-screen menu is also user-friendly enough, with highly legible text and a simple layout, although it would have been more so if it had explanatory text running along the bottom.
Screen/Picture Clarity
Like other LED sets, the 55SV670U delivers superbly deep black levels to justify its 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which makes the rest of the image details sharper and the other colors more vibrant and realistic. Unfortunately, it also suffers from blooming problems, with the bright areas slightly spilling onto the darker parts of the screen – an effect more discernible when viewed off angle. There are also instances when the backlight fluctuates, sending bright flashes of light into the dim areas.
Its 240Hz refresh rate takes care of motion blur, while its dejudder processing and anti-blurring mechanism can be turned on and off separately. De-interlacing either film-based or video-based sources is not a problem either, especially when the Smooth setting of the Film Stabilization mode is engaged. The picture quality of standard definition sources is even enhanced with its Resolution+ mode.
Features
Several other picture controls are provided, including five adjustable picture modes, five aspect ratio selections and full color temperature controls. While the Toshiba Regza 55SV670U lacks interactive and picture-in-picture capability, it is capable of handling videos in DivX format, and offers solid connectivity with four HDMI inputs – three at the back and one at the side – along with a PC input, two component video inputs and both a USB and SD card slot for easy picture, video and music sharing.
The Toshiba Regza 55SV670U may not be the best LED HDTV out there, but it certainly performs well enough to live up to its price – which is comparably low. If you want an LED set and excellent blacks to boast of, then, without paying too much, you can start checking out the 55SV670U – either that or start saving up for a better-performing LED HDTV.
