Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U Review

Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U

The Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U

In spite of their many good points, like screen brightness and energy efficiency, motion resolution remains a weak area for LCD sets, particularly since the pixels remain lit between frames. The Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U, however, takes care of motion blur with its 240Hz effect at little extra cost.

Design

Black and silver are the main colors of the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U. Its sleek black frame fades into a myriad of shiny silver cubes towards the edges, where it finishes off in style with a silver metal border. The same color combination applies to its stand, which conveniently swivels, and even to its clicker, which, though lacking a backlight, has fewer buttons than most remotes that are well arranged and vary in sizes.

The on-screen menu is also user-friendly enough, with a simpler layout and a color scheme that’s easier on the eyes. You’ll need to scroll down to see the more important menu options, though, and you’ll have to try out each function to see what it’s for rather than relying on helpful explanatory text that other HDTVs provide.

Screen/Picture Clarity

Black level performance is another weak area for most conventional LCD HDTVs, and unfortunately, this is apparent on the 55ZV650U. Indeed, its black levels noticeably lack depth, making dark scenes appear washed out and the images somewhat unrealistic. To its credit, the 55ZV650U produces very good shadow detail and highly accurate, saturated colors, which help make up - though not quite - for the unimpressive blacks.

As mentioned earlier, the 55ZV650U has a 240Hz effect, which allows images to appear crisp and clear during fast motion sequences. While this ‘effect’ falls short of the motion resolution of true 240Hz displays, it is still a step up compared to other LCD sets. It also helps that the antiblurring and dejudder processing, which it calls ‘Film Stabilization’, can be engaged individually - something many Sony HDTVs lack - and that both film-based and video-based sources are de-interlaced properly.

Features

The Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U has one of the most extensive picture settings yet among Toshiba models, with five adjustable picture modes and an AutoView mode which automatically adjusts picture quality according to content and ambient lighting. There is also a color management system, gamma controls, color filters and full color temperature settings, along with several other controls. While interactive features are nil, connectivity is pretty solid, with four HDMI inputs, two component video inputs, a PC input and both USB and SD card slots on the side panel.

At around $1500, the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U is a relatively affordable 55-inch LCD HDTV, especially if you count its 240Hz effect, making it an excellent choice for those who want an LCD with good motion resolution without having to pay much. Still, its poor black levels will leave many in search for better LCD HDTV models, and even Plasma sets.

I will keep this review really short — as far as LCD technology…. this is the nicest 55″ big screen I have ever seen.

I will defer to the other reviewers for more specs and details.

I love this TV. I had done a lot of research and had narrowed it down to a Samsung or Panasonic - then I saw this TV. It is much brighter and shaper than the Panasonic and significantly less expensive. Coupled with a a Blur Ray player it really is like being at the movies. No bad things to say about this TV.

I would have preferred less glare but for my extra large bright room this TV was just right. Glare is much less than Plasmas, of course. Consumer Reports gave this TV high marks. That’s my 1st reason for buying. We are enjoing our 1st flat TV so far based on the higher number of hours we’re watching than the large old tube, which we promptly moved to an underused room.

I ordered this Toshiba 55″ TV Friday, Nov 10th, 2009 and received the TV and mount by thursday the following week. This was well within the time period I expected of 5-7 business days from date or oder. The TV was packaged with over 50 pounds of protection. The local agent delivered the TV the same day as it was picked up by them. They moved this 120 lb delivery to an upstairs location, unpacked it, and fired it up. I have view the tv for a couple of days now and feel extrememly happy about the product and the Amazone process of ordering and delivering. Very little fuss and the quick delivery was unexpected. I paid less than $1700 for the Toshiba Regza and have found it to be state of the art regarding picture quality and component capability. The picture is as vivid during the day as night. I will provide more performance info as time progresses. Overall I rate Amazon a five star and that is why I continue to buy from them. Extreme price competiveness, ease of selection, pro/con reviews, and multiple products to choose from in one company are perfect for me. The quick delivery and setup was added sweetner.

Researched for a while, and was leaning towards a Samsung LCD until I came across this Toshiba. Just seemed like a better value to me given the size and feature set. Great picture, blacks seem fine to me despite some other commentary that I’ve read from others. I’m very happy with this purchase.

So far this TV has been great! Amazon was having a one day special where they threw in a Toshiba Blue Ray player for free. Total shipped was approximately $1.600.

I have only had it for one week but I was wondering how the TV held up to you LONG TERM OWNERS. Some of the reviews stated the screen eventually broke. Can any of you give us an update?

This TV is everything that I was looking for. I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this TV, and this does seem like it has the most features for the money. The picture quality is absolutely great. I was a little worried about ordering something so expensive on the internet, but it arrived at my door in 7 days and in perfect condition. Thanks Amazon.com!

STAY AWAY FROM THE ENTIRE TOSHIBA REGZA LINE OF TELEVISIONS.There is a common problem with the sound circuitry and the speaker system in the REGZA series of tv. After being on for an hour or so, the sound becomes extremely distorted with a weird echo effect. Toshiba is fully aware of this probelm because I have contacted them along with many other people with the same problem. Do a little web research on Toshiba Regza Sound Problem or go to [...] and type in Toshiba Sound Problem. It has become obvious that Toshiba has no plans to repair this common problem.

I’d been resisting the urge to replace my 10-year old Toshiba 56″ projection TV that I gifted away rather than try to move to our new home earlier this year. The price and quality equation finally came together with this 55″ Toshiba HD LCD TV. I thought I might settle for something smaller but my adult son, the Techy, convinced me that his only regret was settling for something smaller when he bought his HD/LCD.

The picture quality is great…particularly on cable HD but certainly looks better in every respect and on every channel than our old projection TV. I was amazed at how easy it was to set up with HDMI cables. I think it actually took me longer to install the safety cables (not furnished but recommended) to keep this big boy from tipping over. My wife was relieved and pleased that three thin HDMI cables replaced the unsightly clumps of wire spaghetti that used to live behind our old projection TV that linked TV, cable box, and DVD player. If this TV gives the 10 years of trouble-free service that our last Toshiba provided, it will have been a great investment in entertainment.

I got this Toshiba 55″ 1080p 240hz television for a great price, and although the shipping was free, the package arrived 10 days later than the delivery date set by Amazon; the tracking on this item was misleading as it offered me false information compared to what the shipping company was telling me about the location and shipment of my package. However, it was worth the wait when I received my TV. The picture quality is amazing and no visible distortion. This is by far the best television I, or my friends, have owned! I am very happy with my purchase.

I’ve had this TV for about a month now and absolutely love it. I have a 40″ Samsung 550 TV as well. A family member who lives next door has a 46″ Samsung 650 series so we we’re pretty familiar with the Samsungs and that is what we were looking at when purchasing this one. After looking at the prices for 52″ and 55″ Samsung 650 series I kept coming back to look at this one as it seemed like an incredible value compared to those. I was actually concerned because the price was significantly lower. However, I have owned Toshiba, Hitachi, and JVC TVs in the past and have been pleased with the Japanese TV companies in the past so I bought this from Amazon sight unseen. I had read a lot of reviews on the net on the Toshiba Regza models and most appeared to be positive.

The TV gets shipped via an air freight company and was delivered to my house as scheduled. I elected to not have them do anything but help get the TV in the house and unboxed and setup everything myself. Packaging was standard as was the same as the Samungs. (remove the white clips from the bottom of the box and lift the top off)

I placed it on a solid stand and did not feel the need to attach the recommended safety straps. It is solid on the pedestal and is not going anywhere with the location I have it at.

When I first powered on the TV I was very happy to see a prompt asking me if the TV was being used in a store or at home. I chose home for the obvious reason. Many manufacturers crank up the brightness and contrast to make them look better at the store. Unfortunately, this is the default out of the box experience for other manufacturers. I remember having to turn these down on the Samsungs. While this was a small thing, it was greatly appreciated. Here are my experiences with other areas of the TV:

    APPEARANCE

The TV looks beautiful. A solid black border would have suited me just fine. However, this TV has a light gray gradient on the edges with a checkered pattern. From the viewing position you really do not notice it and it certainly is not a factor when watching TV but it looks like art in that regard. There is an illuminated Toshiba logo centered at the bottom of the TV. If the illumination bothers you then you can disable it in the preferences. Overall it looks a little nicer than my plain black Samsung.

    PICTURE

Excellent picture. Sharp crisp detail. I played Blu-Ray discs through a Samsung 3600 player I had connected to it and they looked awesome. When I purchased this TV from Amazon I got a free Toshiba BDX2000 Blu-ray player with it and moved the 3600 to another room and used it after a couple of days. No difference in the picture between the two. I’ve also watched much HD programming via satellite as well as some SD material too. I hooked my Roku up and streamed SD content from it as well. Regardless of source, the TV performs beautifully. The detail is razor sharp, the colors look true, and the picture continues to impress me. I watch a LOT of movies via HD premium channels as well as Blu-Ray discs. I was really concerned about an LCD over a plasma in this regard but have not bit disappointed in this regard. My other major concern was that movies would look more video-like as opposed to movie-like. On the 46″ Samsung my personal opinion is that things appear to look more video-like. On the 40″ Samsung not so much so, but neither look as good as this Toshiba in my opinion. Of course sitcoms and your standard TV fare look great on the Toshiba as well. Bottom like is that I think this Toshiba looks better for movie buffs. I also noticed that the depth of field on the 40″ and 46″ Samsung do not seem as accurate as on this TV. Depth of field looks normal here and perspective looks accurate to me. I don’t see how anyone can knock anything with the picture on this set. It has a good as anything I have seen in the stores.

    GLARE

Toshiba says this TV has a “CrystalCoat high contrast screen coating”. The best way I can describe the look is by comparing a laptop screen that is glossy vs. one that is matte. This TV definitely falls into the glossy category. The tradeoff between glossy vs. matte has always been glare with vivid, bright, beautiful display vs no glare and a more muted picture in that regard. No TV made is going to have zero glare. This is just part of the way light behaves in regard to reflective surfaces. I have seen complaints that this TV has too much glare. Those who feel strongly in that regard might be a candidate for a set that is more matte-like. However, what we are really talking about here is glare when dark images are displayed on the screen. For example, if you are watching a sitcom or things that are generally more lit then you aren’t going to see any glare even with the windows open and the sun shining in. The difference comes when you have something like the Dark Knight playing where you have many night scenes and dark environments. In those cases, you are going to see glare from any light sources that give off any light in front of the TV. The bottom line is that glare may be worse here than on other LCD TVs. However, and this is a big however…this is also what makes this picture look a lot better in my opinion. So if you choose to go the less-glare route you are also sacrificing something picture-wise to accomplish this. It will not look and bright, vivid, and beautiful. Personally, I do not find the glare to be an issue.

    BLACK LEVELS

A couple of the reviews I had read stated that the black levels on this TV were not good or accurate. This is simply not even close to true. Black levels are excellent. Black levels here are better than the Samsungs in my opinion. Toshiba states that the “DynaLight Backlight Control” automatically adjusts the backlighting to help in this regard and I believe them. To me, this looks more like a plasma in this regard that other LCD TVs. Black levels have always been an issue with LCD TVs to some degree but it looks like Toshiba has resolved that issue here. My last 50″+ TV was rear projection and I was worried that the black levels (especially in movies) might be an issue with the new LCD TV but it simply is not the case.

    SOUND

First, I do not use the internal sound. I set the volume level to 0 after 5 minutes. I find it hard to fathom that someone buys a 55″ TV and uses the internal speakers. At this size I would expect must people have a home theater audio setup. (I do) The few minutes I listened to it through the internal speakers, I did not notice any problems so I cannot speak to the internal audio. Bottom line, if you do not have a 5.1/7.1 setup outside of the TV, do yourself a favor and get one.

    FEATURES

First, you normally do not see LCD TVs with 120Hz at this price point but you get it here. Toshiba uses the backlighting to simulate 240Hz performance but personally I haven’t seen any of this motion blur in sports even on my 40″ Samsung without 120Hz. I have watched HD NFL and NASCAR and just have never seen it on any of the LCD TVs I have seen. Tons of people and reviews have talked about it and I guess that where this would occur, 120Hz is going to help.

Next, another feature you do not see on sets in this price range and many that cost much more and that is the ambient light sensor which can automatically adjust the picture based on the room lighting.

Finally, this TV supports 1080p24. If you do not know what that is or why it is important then do a google search. For those of us that love movies, it is a great feature.

I won’t go through all the features as you can read them in the description or by downloading the user manual. However, I have to say that this TV has more (and friendly) options in the menus and has some really cool stuff that many of the Samsungs do not. (ambient light sensor mentioned above for example). Overall this set has every feature I have seen on other TVs and more. Again, at a great value.

    VALUE

I paid $1631 with free shipping and I see it is now down to $1573. Comparable Samsung TVs will set you back $500-$800 more. Personally, I found this set to exceed my expectations and feel it is better that the Samsungs. Add the price difference in it because a huge value in my opinion. Personally, I am not sure why Toshiba is currently selling at these amazing price points but I am glad I jumped onboard while they were. I assure you that if you buy a Vizio, Insignia, or Sharp LCD TV at this price point then you are getting a sub-par TV. You can spend more to get the LG, Sony, or Samsung but I don’t believe the extra money is buying you a better TV. Best Buy is still selling this TV for $1999 so buy it here from Amazon.

    OVERALL

There is a reason Consumer Reports rated this the #3 TV Overall and the #2 Recommended TV in the 52-inch and larger category. It is a fantastic TV and I think it is being overlooked at the moment only because Samsung and LG are doing so well at the present. If you are reluctant about the price being lower than other TVs with less features, do not be concerned. I would not hesitate to buy this TV again and would recommend it highly to others. Feel free to comment if you have any specific questions.

I ordered the TV after a lot of research and it was delivered Sunday before Thanksgiving! Not a mark on the box but after unpacking the shipper’s agent and I noticed the screen was smashed along the bottom edge of the screen. All the foam and the box was perfect. It looked as if someone had reboxed it and sent it out again after it had already been returned. Long story short, the shipping agent took the set back with him after we refused it. We waited two weeks for the next one and it came in perfect…we set it up and all is well…well, not everything…we received an email that we needed to return the broken tv to Amazon…a quick call to customer service and all is well again…well, not everything…we received another email today(three weeks later# giving us ten days to return the broken TV or we would be charged for it…no problem…another quick call to Amazon and we were promised #again) that this would never happen again. What do you want to bet we get charged for the broken TV? We’re not holding our breath.

The TV was Consumer Reports “best buy” so I (not having a test lab) believe they did due dilligence and now that the tv is in place I’m completely satisfied with it. It is a room killer if you live in a small house…but who cares? The picture is incredible and it’s a stylish set. All you need is a good Blueray (PSIII) and a sound system to make the world right.

Purchased this TV from Amazon. The TV is great, no problems. All problems were a direct result of Amazon. In spite of Amazon indicating the item was in stock, the order was not filled for 5 days after the order was placed. When I checked on delivery status 9 days after placing the order, I discovered the price was reduced almost $100.00 prior to the order arriving in my city for delivery. Amazon advised that if I had contacted then within 7 days of placing the order they would have honored the new price. They weren’t interested in the fact that the item had not been delivered and it had just arrived in my city 9 days after the order was placed. It also didn’t seem to matter that it took them 5 days to fill the order, yet I could not cancel it when I was advised of the 5 day delay. This item was available at other vendors for similar price, but I went with Amazon due to past good experiences, never again.

After research for a new LCD TV, we decided on the Toshiba and were not disappointed. This unit received the #2 spot on consumer reports list for a reason. Using the proper cables to support the highest refresh rate we experienced an excellent picture. Until we purchase the receiver we would like, we continue to use the TV’s speakers. They provide adequate sound but nothing stellar. A nice surround sound system is sure to compliment the beautiful picture on this 55″ set but isn’t mandatory. We’re very happy with our decision and expect years of trouble free service from this set as we’ve owned a smaller Toshiba Regza TV for several years with no issues whatsoever.

I bought this for my husband’s christmas present and he just loved it. It looks really great in our family room and my kids loved it as well. As for the price, this was the best deal I’ve ever found. Toshiba REGZA 55ZV65OU is a very good 55 inch LCD 1080P HDTV.It has clearscan 240. My wife told me to buy it, because my old Toshiba 44 inch HDTV was so bulky. This will be wall-mounted. The pictures are great, sound is good, and it’s easy to set up. The sharpness is good, even at an angle. My dogs brains’ can process the pictures at 1080P. The first week, they would bark at the intruders on the screen and look behind the set to see what was going on. Sometimes they sit on the couch with me to watch TV. I would buy it again. It came quickly, undamaged, with a minimum of fuss from Amazon. No taxes or shipping fees made it an even better deal.

Free shipping, no taxes and lower price saved hundreds of dollars from going to Best Buy. When I 1st purchased the price was $1,467.00. In the next 2 days I checked the site to make sure the price did not go down. It did show a better price on Sunday at $1,399. A quick email to Amazon.com asking for the credit and they were responsive within 12 hours with a yes. I now own 3 Regza Toshiba TV’s. All work fantastic. We replaced our 17 year old, very heavy 36″ standard TV (which was very serviceable right to the end) with this 55″ Toshiba HDTV. In addition to the realiability of the old set, we relied on Consumer Reports to determine that this make and model is the one we wanted to purchase. We have not been disappointed. I bought this TV on a Friday afternoon and was delivered the following Tuesday. Just before it arrived, the price dropped $100.00 to $1299. I emailed customer service requesting a price adjustment, and five minutes later, they responded with a “yes”, but this was an “exception” to their policy, since the item had not been delivered yet. These details may be important to some of you.

I am not going to get into “videophile speak” like others since I am not one. However, I will say this is a great TV in many ways. Consumer Reports 2010 Buying Guide listed this item as a “CR best buy”, and that is with a $2,000 list price. I decided on this one after weeks of research (online, big box stores). But having this recommendation by CR made me go with Toshiba, with Samsung and Sony coming in second and third. I’ve had other Toshiba products (TV’s, DVR) and they work great after years of service. I’m glad I went with Toshiba.

However, I now too have the same bad sound issue. It’s a distorted echo type sound. You can fix it in the short term by turning the TV off and on, but it does come back. And I wonder in the long term will this quick fix stop working and will it get worse. Lucky for me I am still within the return period for this TV, so I can send it back, but for those who cannot I feel sorry for.

Now if you future buyers choose to ignore this warning too, make sure you really use the TV a lot during the return period. I work at home and keep the TV on all day, so I figure I got lucky that the problem revealed itself sooner.

I hope Toshiba finds a way to fix this problem, as this really is one of the prettiest LCD’s I have seen. For now we will be retuning this one and looking for a new TV again.

Toshiba REGZA 55ZV650U 55-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with ClearScan 240, Black Buy this ZV650 model if you want a refurbished TV and a disappointment.

I rarely write any review due to my bad written English, but I am doing this to WARN others so they won’t make the same mistake that I did.

First off let me say that I did some research before I bought this Toshiba ZV650 series TV. This TV got my attention when I was in Signal Hills Costco. It was a 47″ positioned between a 46″ Sony and a 46″ LG. I reset all 3 TV’s picture setting to standard, yet this Toshiba’s picture was still much better than the Sony and the LG that priced about [...] more. But I need a 50″ or bigger due to my big living room. So I went home and did research on Amazon and saw the warning about the sound problem. But just like other Amazon reviewers and purchasers before me, I thought it was just random issue or those folks had a bad luck. So I ignored the WARNING and bought it any way. I was DEAD WRONG.

The first day I got the TV, I watched Netflix and DVD via HDMI cable. I get that echo or gobble sound problem about 3 times within 2 hours. Yet I did not want to return the TV because the picture quality was amazing, plus I got the assurance knowing that I can always call Toshiba to get the portable 2 GB USB storage to upgrade my firmware and this problem will go away (I know this from reading Amazon reviews and posts from other sites), but I was WRONG AGAIN.

After a week, I started to get annoy by this problem, so I called Toshiba and tell them about the USB to upgrade the firmware. Toshiba did not deny or acknowledge that this is a known problem. The only thing they said was that they will contact their repair center for me. After calling every week for 7 weeks, finally their repair center contacted me and said that they have ordered a sound card to replace it. They said they never heard of the USB firmware upgrade that I read on the web to fix this problem. So today they called me and said they want to take my TV away to their repair shop. Judging from how rude the repair guy spoke, I refused to have them take away my brand new TV to their shop, and I have plenty of reasons to back it up. Let me give you a few examples: I sent my HP top of the line laptop to get fixed, when it came back, 3 PC card side covers were missing. I complaint to HP, they said I should have taken those covers out before shipping to them. I told them those covers are part of the laptop. What would you do if a mechanic tells you to take the fenders out of your car before taking it to do oil change? Later on my HP laptop was filled with dirt and dust because of those open slots. About 6 months ago I sent my Toshiba laptop to get fixed. I had a clear plastic taped to the display to protect the screen. When it came back, the screen protector was removed and the display had a scratch about 2 inches at the right area of the screen. I reported to Toshiba, they said that the scratch was already there when they got it and they never saw any screen protector. Just one more recent example: I have a 2 year old Honda that had an engine block cracked and the anti-freeze leak thru it. I took it to Honda dealer and left it there for a month because they had to order engine for me. At the time I drove my car out of the dealership after the repair was done, I turned the radio on. My ear drums were about the blow because the radio volume was on max and sub woofer volume was on max. After further inspection, I noticed that all my FM1 presets were set to Spanish stations, but my FM2 presets still had all my fav stations. However, the sub-woofer was blown and rattled so bad that I had to unplug it. I took it back to the dealer; they said that I set these things up to get free speakers replacement just like the free engine. I loved my premium sound system but not any more. Bottom line: your words against theirs.

I can tell you more horror stories about bad repair services, but you got my point. Repair people came to fix TV at my home is nothing new; I had this done before with my other TV that I bought from Costco. I don’t know why these guys can’t replace a sound card in my living room. Maybe they need a hydraulic lifter? Right now I feel like a fool who paid a full price on refurbished TV. Also, some reviewer said that if you plug your sound out to a surround sound system, the problem went away. I tried that too but it did not work because the problem is not the internal speakers. The problem is the circuit that interfaces between HDMI cable and the sound system. If the HDMI sound circuitry is bad, regardless what speakers you use, it will do the same thing. For now the work around is to pause DVD or Netflix, switch to TV, and switch back. FYI: I do not have cable box with HDMI so I don’t have problem with TV at all. If I just let the bad sound continues, it will last about 30 to 90 sec, but it’s just annoying when you try to pay attention to what people say in the movies. I also could replace HDMI cable with those multiple color component cables, but that would defeat the purpose of having 4 HDMI ports. That is just lame.

Conclusion: The picture is amazing and the price is great. But if you want to keep calling Toshiba weekly and have some strangers take your brand new TV away and bring it back with scratches and makes you feel like you are buying a refurbished TV with the full price, be my guest. But know that you are being WARNED. I don’t remember who the author was but there was a saying that said, “You don’t live long enough to make all the mistakes, so let other people make them for you and you just learn from them”.
