In spite of their many good points, like screen brightness and energy efficiency, motion resolution remains a weak area for LCD sets, particularly since the pixels remain lit between frames. The Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U, however, takes care of motion blur with its 240Hz effect at little extra cost.
Design
Black and silver are the main colors of the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U. Its sleek black frame fades into a myriad of shiny silver cubes towards the edges, where it finishes off in style with a silver metal border. The

same color combination applies to its stand, which conveniently swivels, and even to its clicker, which, though lacking a backlight, has fewer buttons than most remotes that are well arranged and vary in sizes.
The on-screen menu is also user-friendly enough, with a simpler layout and a color scheme that’s easier on the eyes. You’ll need to scroll down to see the more important menu options, though, and you’ll have to try out each function to see what it’s for rather than relying on helpful explanatory text that other HDTVs provide.
Screen/Picture Clarity
Black level performance is another weak area for most conventional LCD HDTVs, and unfortunately, this is apparent on the 55ZV650U. Indeed, its black levels noticeably lack depth, making dark scenes appear washed out and the images somewhat unrealistic. To its credit, the 55ZV650U produces very good shadow detail and highly accurate, saturated colors, which help make up – though not quite – for the unimpressive blacks.
As mentioned earlier, the 55ZV650U has a 240Hz effect, which allows images to appear crisp and clear during fast motion sequences. While this ‘effect’ falls short of the motion resolution of true 240Hz displays, it is still a step up compared to other LCD sets. It also helps that the antiblurring and dejudder processing, which it calls ‘Film Stabilization’, can be engaged individually – something many Sony HDTVs lack – and that both film-based and video-based sources are de-interlaced properly.
Features
The Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U has one of the most extensive picture settings yet among Toshiba models, with five adjustable picture modes and an AutoView mode which automatically adjusts picture quality according to content and ambient lighting. There is also a color management system, gamma controls, color filters and full color temperature settings, along with several other controls. While interactive features are nil, connectivity is pretty solid, with four HDMI inputs, two component video inputs, a PC input and both USB and SD card slots on the side panel.
At around $1500, the Toshiba Regza 55ZV650U is a relatively affordable 55-inch LCD HDTV, especially if you count its 240Hz effect, making it an excellent choice for those who want an LCD with good motion resolution without having to pay much. Still, its poor black levels will leave many in search for better LCD HDTV models, and even Plasma sets.
